Mykonos by Private Jet: Airport Rules, Seasons and Transfers

Mykonos airport is slot-coordinated in summer and short on parking. How to plan the flight, when to go, and how to move between villa, sea and Delos.

Flying privately to Mykonos in summer is straightforward to book and harder to execute than it looks. The airport is small, slot-coordinated in the summer season, and has very little room for business aircraft on the ground. The aircraft will usually drop you and leave. Planning around that one fact, rather than the flight time, is what makes the trip work.

What Mykonos suits

Mykonos is a summer island built around villas, beach restaurants, boats and a late night if you want one. It suits a group of friends or a family with older children who want a social week; a principal combining a few days on the island with a yacht charter in the Cyclades; or a short add-on to a wider Mediterranean summer. It suits less well a party that wants quiet roads, a long cultural itinerary or a winter break, when much of the island closes.

Many visiting parties take a villa rather than a hotel. The island is compact, so the choice between the south-coast beaches, the quieter north and a house near the town decides more about the week than the property itself.

Reading the season

Late May and June

Beach venues open through late May, the sea warms, and the island is busy without being full. For many parties this is the most practical window: the full set of restaurants and boats, with easier bookings and shorter queues at the airport.

July and August

Peak season, with the most flights, the highest demand for villas, tables and boats, and the strongest wind. Greek sailing guides describe the meltemi as a dry northerly that is typically strongest in July and August and can make sea days rough on the exposed side of the island. Keep a boat day flexible and favour the sheltered south coast when it blows.

September and early October

Warm sea, lighter crowds and a calmer pace. Seasonal venues start to close from late September into early October, so confirm any specific restaurant or beach club before building a date around it.

November to April

The island is largely closed to visitors in the off-season. A winter trip is possible but rarely what this guide’s readers are looking for.

Flying in: a coordinated airport with little room to stay

Mykonos Island National Airport (LGMK, JMK) has a single runway, 16/34, of about 1,900 m. It is operated by Fraport Greece. Four rules shape every private flight in summer; the operator and its ground handler confirm the current version for your dates:

  • Slots. The Hellenic Slot Coordination Authority lists Mykonos as a Level 3 coordinated airport for summer 2026, so business flights need an allocated slot for landing and take-off.
  • Parking permission. Fraport Greece requires every general and business aviation flight at its regional airports to obtain a parking authorisation (PPR for apron clearance) in advance, through a local ground handler.
  • Very short ground time. Trip-support providers report that in recent summers business aircraft have been limited to brief turnarounds with no overnight parking. Treat the aircraft as dropping you off and repositioning, and confirm the current limit with the operator when you book.
  • Hours. The airport publishes 24-hour operation through the main summer season (from 1 May into late October in 2026), with shorter hours outside it. Confirm the hours for your dates.

Because the aircraft generally cannot wait on the island in summer, a return trip is in practice two round trips: one to drop you and leave, one to come back and collect you. Operators typically base the aircraft at a larger Greek airport in between, or fly it home. That repositioning affects price and timing, so it is worth discussing at the quote stage. The runway accepts a broad range of business jets; whether a particular aircraft suits the trip is the operator’s call, taking account of weight, weather and the ground-time limit. Our on-demand charter page explains how quotes are built.

Plan your trip to Mykonos

Via Athens

Some parties fly into Athens International (LGAV), which takes any aircraft size and has more room on the ground, and finish by helicopter or sea. A helicopter is the faster of the two; high-speed ferries from Rafina or Piraeus take a few hours according to the ferry booking platforms, which suits a party that would rather avoid the island’s airport at peak times. This routing also fits a day or two in Athens at either end.

On the island

Distances are short but roads are narrow and busy in high season. Many parties use a car and driver on call for the week rather than separate transfers, and a boat for anything along the coast. A day boat is often the easiest way to reach the south-coast beach restaurants without the road, and a natural way to spend a meltemi-free morning.

Delos, a short boat ride from Mykonos, is a UNESCO World Heritage site: an extensive ancient sanctuary and port that rewards an early start, before the heat. Check the site’s opening days and hours for your dates, as they vary.

Trip-support providers note that helicopter landings on the island are limited to approved sites and need permission in advance, so an island-hopping helicopter itinerary needs planning rather than a same-day call.

Combining Mykonos with the rest of the Aegean

  • Mykonos and a Cyclades charter. Join a yacht in Mykonos or a nearby island and spend the rest of the week at sea. Our Mediterranean yacht charter guide covers embarkation ports and timing.
  • Athens and the islands. Arrive in Athens, spend a night or two, then continue to Mykonos by helicopter or boat.
  • Riviera and Mykonos. A natural summer pairing for parties moving around the Mediterranean; our Côte d’Azur and Monaco guide covers the French end.

Multi-island trips are where the airport rules bite. Each additional landing means another round of slot and parking requests wherever the airport requires them, so a fixed sequence of islands is easier to deliver than an open-ended one.

How Certified Jets arranges it

Certified Jets arranges your flight with a licensed operator suited to the route and the airport, and coordinates the rest of the trip around it. For Mykonos that means planning the drop-off, repositioning and collection as one itinerary, arranging the onward helicopter or boat when you route through Athens, and booking the pieces on the island: the villa, a car and driver for the week, restaurant tables, a day boat or a longer yacht charter, and the Delos visit. Where needed, we can also arrange personal security through licensed local providers. All of it is subject to availability and local regulations, confirmed when you enquire. To start, use the enquiry form with your dates, party size and the villa or area if you have one.

Questions

Can the aircraft wait on Mykonos for the week?

In summer, generally not. Trip-support providers report very short ground times and no overnight parking for business aircraft in recent summers. Expect the operator to drop you, reposition, and return for the departure.

How far ahead should we arrange the flight?

The airport paperwork is handled by the operator and its ground handler. The harder constraints are usually villas, boats and aircraft availability in peak season, so for July and August it helps to start as soon as dates are firm.

Is it better to fly direct or through Athens?

Direct is quicker when slots and parking align. Routing through Athens adds a helicopter or ferry leg but gives more flexibility on aircraft and timing, and avoids the island’s busiest hours.

Will wind affect our plans?

It can affect boat days and sea transfers in July and August. Build in a spare day for anything at sea that matters, such as a Delos visit or a yacht embarkation.

Plan your trip to Mykonos

Your departure and arrival airports, approximate dates and the number of passengers are enough to start. If your dates are flexible, give your best estimate and say so.

In the remarks, mention Mykonos by Private Jet: Airport Rules, Seasons and Transfers and list anything else to arrange (accommodation, transfers, a yacht, a car, security), so your advisor has the full picture.
