How Much Does It Cost to Charter a Private Jet? (2026)

Certified Jets’ market estimate, based on published broker guides from 2025 and 2026, puts on-demand charter at $2,000 to $3,500 per flight hour for a turboprop and $8,500 to $13,500 per flight hour for a heavy jet. It is an estimate, not a Certified Jets price or a quote. Taxes, fees, positioning, crew overnights, daily minimums and de-icing may be added. A trip’s price is the hours it bills, including hours the aircraft flies without you, plus the charges that sit outside the hourly rate.

This guide sets out the estimate by category, then the main items that move a quote, so you or your advisor can read one line by line.

Estimated hourly charter rates by category

Category Estimate, USD per flight hour
Turboprop $2,000 to $3,500
Very light jet $3,000 to $4,000
Light jet $4,000 to $5,500
Midsize jet $5,000 to $7,500
Super-midsize jet $6,500 to $9,500
Heavy jet (large cabin) $8,500 to $13,500
Ultra-long-range jet $12,500 to $17,500
VIP airliner $19,000 to $31,500, quoted per trip

Certified Jets market estimate based on published broker guides, 2025–2026. It is not a quote and not a Certified Jets price. For each category, the low end is the mean of the low figures in the guides that list it and the high end is the mean of their high figures, rounded to the nearest $500. The guides describe their basis differently: one says its hourly pricing reflects estimated flight time only, and another lists what its hourly rates exclude. Taxes, fees, positioning, crew overnights, daily minimums and de-icing may be added.

VIP airliners are quoted per trip, so treat that row as an indication of scale; ultra-long-range trips are best priced the same way, as a quote for the specific route.

For what separates the categories beyond price, see light vs midsize vs heavy jets and the aircraft categories page. Purchase prices are a separate question, covered in buying a private jet and the most expensive private jets in 2026.

Why an estimate is not a quote

On-demand charter is priced per trip, for a specific aircraft, route and date, with no rate fixed in advance. One published guide says its rates vary with routing, scheduling and availability, and fuel prices. The estimates tell you how categories compare; they are not a prediction of what a given trip will cost.

What drives the price of a private jet charter

Aircraft category

Each category carries its own range, and the ranges rise from turboprop to VIP airliner. The right category is the smallest one that carries your passengers and luggage and flies the sector without a fuel stop you would rather avoid. A larger category than the trip needs puts every billed hour in a higher estimated range.

Flight time, including positioning

Hourly rates apply to billed flight time, and that is not only the time you are on board. If the aircraft is based away from your departure airport, it must first fly there empty. That is positioning. One published guide counts positioning, time in the air and a two-hour daily minimum in billable flight time; another says total trip pricing may include positioning. An aircraft based near your departure airport needs fewer positioning hours.

One-way, return and the empty return leg

A one-way trip can leave the aircraft far from its base. Bringing it home is another positioning flight, and that return can be priced into your quote even though no one is on board. On a round trip, the aircraft carries you on both legs. For that reason, do not assume a one-way quote will cost half of a return over the same route; ask for both.

Waiting days, overnights and crew

If you stay at the destination, the aircraft can wait with you, or fly home and come back for you. Waiting can add parking or hangar charges: one published guide estimates $500 to $1,500 a day, depending on aircraft size, and another lists ramp, hangar and overnights among the costs its hourly rates exclude. Flying home and back adds positioning time in both directions. Which costs less depends on the distance and the length of the stay, so ask for both versions.

Crew time has legal limits. Under US rules for unscheduled Part 135 flights, a two-pilot crew’s flight time is limited to 10 hours, measured over 24 consecutive hours or within a duty period of no more than 14 hours, and the rules require rest periods of at least 10 consecutive hours (14 CFR 135.267). A long day out and back can run into those limits, which is one reason a trip may need an overnight, and crew overnight expenses may be added to the quote.

Minimum billing matters on short days. One published guide counts a daily minimum of two hours; another lists daily minimums among what its rates exclude. Ask whether a daily minimum applies to your quote.

Landing, handling and parking

Airport charges differ by airport and by aircraft. One published guide estimates landing at $150 to $500 and ramp and handling at $100 to $500 per visit, depending on aircraft size and weight, and international fees at $500 to $5,000 or higher. A quote that looks low because these are left out is not comparable with one that includes them.

De-icing

If a winter departure needs de-icing, check who pays. One published guide estimates the cost at $1,000 to $10,000; another lists de-icing among the items its hourly rates exclude. Because the need depends on the weather on the day, the charge may not be known when you book.

Catering

One published guide estimates $600 to $1,000 for lunch for four passengers, and another lists catering and ground transportation among the costs its hourly rates exclude. Specify what you want when you request the quote, so it is priced rather than added later.

Taxes, including US FET

The US federal excise tax on a domestic charter is 7.5% of the amount paid, plus a domestic segment tax, $5.30 for 2026, for each segment, multiplied by the number of passengers on board. In the IRS’s own example, a $1,000 charter carrying seven passengers over two segments owes $149.20 in tax. International flights that begin or end in the US are generally taxed at $23.40 per person for 2026. The fixed amounts are set by calendar year. One published guide lists taxes among what its hourly rates exclude, so check whether a quote includes them.

Peak dates

One published guide lists seasonal demand among the factors that total trip pricing may include, so ask whether your dates affect the quote.

Short notice

Short notice does not change how a price is built, but it narrows the choice: the quote can draw only on aircraft that are free and can position in time, which may mean a longer positioning flight or a larger aircraft than the trip needs.

Empty legs: a lower price, less control

An empty leg is a flight an aircraft would otherwise make without passengers, usually because it is repositioning after dropping off one client or returning to base. Operators offer that sector at a reduced price, because they bear the cost of the flight whether or not anyone is on board.

The trade-off is control. The route and departure time are set by the aircraft’s schedule, not by you, and the flight can move or be canceled if the original booking changes. Many empty legs appear only days before departure. That makes them a fit for a flexible one-way trip, not for a fixed meeting or a round trip. Our empty leg guide covers the limitations in full.

How to get an accurate number

A quote is only as accurate as the request. Send:

  • departure and arrival airports, or the cities if you are flexible on airports;
  • dates and preferred times for each leg, and whether the trip is one-way or a return;
  • how long you will stay, so the quote can compare waiting with repositioning;
  • the number of passengers, and luggage, including anything oversized such as skis or golf bags;
  • catering, ground transport and any other requests;
  • how flexible you are on time, airport or aircraft category.

Then ask that the quote show flight time and positioning time separately, list the fees and taxes it includes and those that would be billed afterward, state the cancellation terms, and name the operator.

Certified Jets is an air charter broker, not a direct air carrier. We arrange on-demand charter with licensed operators, and flights are operated by licensed air carriers that hold operational control of each flight. To price a trip, request an on-demand charter quote with your route, dates and passenger count. If you fly often enough to prefer hourly rates fixed in advance, Certified Jets membership is the alternative to pricing each trip.
